It is hard to say which is better, the book or the movie

They are as different as night and day. The only thing the movies have in common with the book is the character of Jason Bourne. The stories are totally different. There is no car race through the streets of Paris in a mini; there is no escape from the American Embassy. But the action is fast and the story is real. The author had to have spent time in the places he writes about because that is the only way he could have known the subtle nuances that he describes. Of course the last Jason Bourne book was written in the early 90's when cell phones weren't as prevalent as they are now. But the talent of the man Jason Bourne is still the same. The speaker of a number of languages, he understands many cultures. Robert Ludlum does an excellent job in sucking you into the world of Jason Bourne and into his love for his women. But unlike in the movies, she doesn’t die. Her strength and love for this mercurial man is astounding. Her determination to keep him safe and is willing to go to any length to keep him in her life.
In the first book he appears out of nowhere and kidnaps her, forces her to help him escape from a hotel. She is furious for his intrusion and the sudden danger he thrusts her into. Then when they are captured and she is taken to the river to first be rapped, and then murdered, Jason goes to extraordinary lengths to save her. After saving her, he is badly wounded, he is ready to die, still not knowing why this is happening he commands her to get out while she can. Leave she does, but doesn’t get too far.
She realizes that he came back to save her, at great risk to his life, and if she leaves, he will most likely die. She returns, refuses to listen to his pleas for her to leave him, she takes him to a hotel where she nurses him back to health. Now she has thrust herself into a strange series of events that will not only test her resolve but his.
He teaches her to be a Chameleon, to play the spy game. As he suddenly learns who he is, how he got there, as the memories come back, a connection is formed between them. A bond that was not forged in a weekend love tryst, but melded from being placed into danger and depending upon the other for a rescue. As this woman and Jason experience more, and do more together, they suddenly find that their complimentary presence is needed by the other.
As the story line of each book is revealed, you realize the extraordinary talents of this man called Jason Bourne, and his alter ego David Webb. As David needs Jason to navigate the intricate plots and subplots they find themselves in, you learn of the awesome talent that Jason Bourne possess and why he can’t be left alone by those who would like to use him. But you also learn how David Webb, an academic nerd, also possesses power as well. Together they perform the impossible which must be done if they are to survive.

I LOVE the movies, but you should definitely read the books!

I am a big fan of the Bourne films--they're smart, exciting, complicated. I picked up the books to pre-read them for my teenage son (who wanted to read them) and quickly realized I was going to have trouble putting the books down. While I wouldn't recommend the books for young teenagers--violence, profanity, more sensuality than I'd allow personally--they are BRILLIANT. What I was most surprised about was how dramatically the screenplays diverge from the books, especially after the IDENTITY. While some (and only some) of the characters overlap between film and book, their characters (including Bourne's) are dramatically different than they are portrayed in the films, making for a completely new and exciting experience to read the books for the first time. Ludlum is genius in his vivid descriptions and well-researched locations--you'll wonder how he knows so much about so many different places in the world, and the books literally take you around the world and back. Highly recommend (for a more mature audience)!

just finished the first book

I had bought the Bourne series in paperback years ago. I wanted a kindle copy to read them again. It should be mentioned if you saw the movies, you did not see the same story that is in the books. I love the movies, but they took great liberties with the characters and the story. I can tell you the books are just as riveting, action packed, etc. They have an enemy named Carlos and people live that died in the movies (and visa versa). I love my kindle, so this was a natural step. You will enjoy this series.

The personification of ADDICTION really brings the problem into focus and life. Something like in SCREWTAPE LETTERS by C. S. Lewis, we see the evil intent of "addiction," smooth and devious. He knows how to hook all kinds of people and keep them hooked. To see it from Addiction's viewpoint can really slap a dabbler in drugs and habits that produce drug-like states. The time to digest and share this book is as much as possible before a person gets addicted.

This book is one of a series written by Ken Montrose, a Certified Addictions Counselor with a Master's degree in Developmental Psychology. He has many years of experience in helping people with addictions, including his own.

To know how your enemy operates gives you the weapons to help you be the victor. So Mr. Addiction promises: "I thought I'd tell you exactly how I plan to destroy your life, to see if that would make the game a little more interesting.... Just to be really fair I'll leave space for you to plan how you will defeat me." Mr. Addiction is so confident of his skills and power that he gives you a way out. Yes, first you have to recognize your weakness, and then seek the help and resources to help you recover.

I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to those who are so self-confident and proud that they think they'll never get addicted to anything--drugs, alcohol, prescription drugs, sex, games, internet, etc. That's where a lot of young people fit in. Please -- get this book to them early.

A pretty basic book on addictions, could be helpful to some, but not in my case. My husband is an addict and this book was of no value to him or me. Lots of other books have helped more.

Dunning was historically accurate, not racist

I have just read "Reconstruction, Political & Economic, 1865-1877" by William A. Dunning and also the books on Reconstruction by Stampp, DuBois, Foner, and DuBose & Greer's "Alabama's Tragic Decade" and I wish to say that Dunning and the "Dunning School" was historically accurate and academically sound in his analysis of the "scar of Reconstruction" as recorded by the various historians and politicians during the 50 years after the war between the Confederacy and the United States (what was left of it after secession). The reviewer who stated that Dunning was "rationalizing the horrors of Reconstruction and Jim Crow segregation" and that "Dunning continues to exert a malevolent influence on Americans who seek to justify their racist views" is the one who is discredited. Dunning's book and works still play a major role in recording the errors of Reconstruction and the background to the politics and economics being played out by the Congress and the Reconstruction "governments" in the south during the "tragic decade". While Stampp, Dubois, and Foner have produced important works on the history of Reconstruction, nonetheless these authors revise the subject matter with a particular bias and with their own prejudices based on ethnicity. I rate all of them scholarly and accurate but the "elephant" they are describing is not just the tusks, trunk, legs, tail, and body of the elephant, but a total creature. Each has touched a part of the history of Reconstruction, including Dunning. Dunning is still historically accurate.

Interesting, but dead wrong

The "Dunning School," centered at a Columbia University where Dunning taught, provided the academic underpinnings for rationalizing the horrors of reconstruction and later of Jim Crow segregation. Dunning made "Birth of a Nation" possible.
Some of the material is useful for professional historians or students who are aware of the context. Much of the data is relevant.
But nearly 80 years after his death, Dunning continues to exert a malevolent influence on Americans who seek to justify their racist views. A tragedy, because Dunning himself would likely have acknowledged that he was wrong.
As it is, the "Dunning School" is totally discredited.
