About the Author

Bernard Porter is Emeritus Professor of Modern History, University of Newcastle, UK. One of the most important and controversial historians of the British Imperial period, his works include The Absent-Minded Imperialists (2006), winner of the AHA Maurice Forkosch Prize. He has taught at the Universities of Hull, Rochester (NY State), Yale and Sydney, and held Research Fellowships at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and the Australian National University and is currently a visiting professor at the University of Copenhagen.

In addition, chapters have been written by authors that reflect the full international body of research on the employment relationship and provide information about legislation, governance and cultural differences across nations. The conceptual and empirical foundations for understanding the employment relationship from these different theoretical perspectives facilitates the establishment of the convergent and discriminant validity of the psychological contract and the investments-contributions models of the employment relationship in relation to related exchange constructs such as perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange. The interdisciplinary and international nature of the employment relationship literature reviewed and integrated in this volume provides a richness that is rarely available in studies of the workplace, and many new and provocative ideas are presented in this volume. Bringing these perspectives together provides greater comprehensiveness, clarity, synthesis and understanding of the employment relationship. This volume is designed to promote the thinking of scholars on the employment relationship area. About the Author

Jacqueline A.-M. Coyle-Shapiro is a reader in Organizational Behavior in the Department of Industrial Relations at the London School of Economics where she received her PhD. Her current research interests include the employment relationship, psychological contracts, organizational citizenship behavior, and organizational change. She has published in such journals as the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science and the Journal of Vocational Behavior. She is Consulting Editor, and has served as Guest Editor, for the Journal of Organizational Behavior. Lynn M. Shore is a Professor of Management and Senior Associate in the W.T. Beebe Institute of Personnel and Employment Relations at Georgia State University. She is also a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Irvine. She is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Psychology, has served as Guest Editor for the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management Review. M. Susan Taylor is Deans Professor of Human Resources and Director of the Center for Human Capital, Innovation, and Technology (HCIT) at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland at College Park. She received her Ph.D from Purdue University and is currently working the areas of organizational justice, strategic human resource management, the employee-organization relationship, and managerial career transitions. Taylor has published in such journals as the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, the Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Science, Personnel Psychology, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Lois E. Tetrick is Director of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Programme at the George Mason University. She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Organizational Behavior. I'm a PT student and I found this text to be invaluable. Lundy-Ekman does a great job of having that balance of information so that information isn't "dumbed" down but it doesn't get overly technical. This was my primary source in my neuroscience learning. Her "clinical pearls", case examples, and overall focus on the clinical aspects of neuroscience makes this a superb text for a graduate level intro to neuroscience course. Great book if you don't want a whole lot of detail!

I used this book as well as Blumenfeld's Neuroscience textbook for PT school. While Blumenfeld offered more detail, this book was great for learning the different tracts. It provides a good overview of neuroscience and includes many relevant and helpful case studies. It has enough detail for the non-neuro PT but if you are interested in being a neuro therapist I would recommend Blumenfeld.

About the Author

Maureen A. Knechtel, MPAS, PA-C, received a bachelor’s degree in health sciences and a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She has spent her clinical career as a physician assistant specializing in general cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology. She teaches EKG recognition and interpretation to both physician assistants and nurse practitioners and has been a guest lecturer nationally and locally on topics including chronic angina, ischemic heart disease in women, hypertension, and mixed hyperlipidemia. Maureen is a fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Tennessee Academy of Physician Assistants, and is currently an assistant professor and principal faculty member with the Milligan College Physician Assistant Program.

Easy to Read, Concise, Great for Grad Students

This book stands out as easy to read, very concise and good for grad students or those looking to master the EKG. There was good use of graphics for those who are more of a visual learner, yet plenty of text explanation for those who prefer that method. As someone who works in medical education, I would recommend this book for coursework or for those who need to have a reference on their book shelf for continuing education.

Excellent text on EKGs

This text is a perfect guide for both nurse pracitioners and physicians assistants who desire to develop a comprehensive understanding of EKGs. The format of the book is well organized into coherent parts and chapters that follow a practical and meanginful sequence. It offers the reader a concise and easy-to-read manual that facilitates mastery of reading EKGs. Diagrams are extremely helpful and well placed. Perfect text for both graduate students and those who currently practice in the cardiovascular field. Review questions at the end of each chapter allow opportunities for the student to summarize and clarify main points before moving on to the next section.

Essential book for mid levels. I have been in the cardiology field for 6 years and this book has helped me become confident in rhythm patterns I have had difficulty interpreting in the past. Very concise and easy to understand. This will be the only EKG book you will need.

An excellent intellectual history

The book's a first-rate exploration of the status, use, and perhaps abuse of "common sense" (and the related concept of good sense) in a fluid modern world with no definite structure of intellectual authority. The author has dug out a great deal of interesting illustrative material, and done a good job tracing the various themes, variations, and inversions and presenting them in really quite readable prose.

Her account emphasizes post-Glorious Revolution England, 18th c. Aberdeen and Amsterdam (common sense philosophy, and the radical early Enlightenment), and revolutionary Philadelphia and Paris, but there's also a sort of postscript that takes the story into the present and lets her talk briefly about Hannah Arendt as well as Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin.

There's no real discussion of the role common sense and good sense *should* play in our understanding of things, so the reader has to provide that for himself. As an academic she seems a bit uneasy about opposition to structures of intellectual authority while at the same time favoring subversion on general principles, but that's only to be expected of someone in her position and doesn't affect the value of the book.

Politics and Common Sense: A History

Thomas Paine as one of history's instigators of fashionable political wisdom stated: "He that rebels against reason is a real rebel, but he that in defense of reason rebels against tyranny has a better title to Defender of the Faith, than George the Third."
And preceding Paine's fractional application of common sense upon American popular democracy, Sophia Rosenfeld reveals that it functioned in sundry manners in Britain and Europe during the Enlightenment and the political era which followed. In "Common Sense: A Political History" Rosenfeld (professor of history; author: "A Revolution in Language") discloses how populist notions have often been employed as a political devices; furthermore, common sense and populist thought have been flexible, a bit ambiguous, and mutable.
Paine wrote: "Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one."
In Common Sense: A Political History, historian Sophia Rosenfeld explores the genesis of the phrase "common sense" and the evolution of its definition (and application) over the years. Arresting and enlightening, this book has as much to say about political history as it does the present day.

Rosenfeld writes: "Common Sense. Good luck finding a law-maker or pundit who does not claim it as his (or her) most trusted ally. We can argue over how we got to this point or even whether politics is better or worse off a result. Those questions animate Common Sense: A Political History. One thing, however, is beyond dispute. The idea of common sense has led to a lot of truly dreadful music. And its antithesis, nonsense--a big-time insult in the world of politics--has inspired some of the best music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As the great French writer Denis Diderot put it several centuries ago, when the politics of common sense was just coming into its own, a man has in common sense just about everything necessary to be "a good father, a good husband, a good merchant, [and] a good man," not to mention "a bad poet, a bad musician, a bad painter, [and] a very dull lover."

Moreover Thomas Paine and a few other political writers were critics of established religion. Paine opined: "It is not a God, just and good, but a devil, under the name of God, that the Bible describes."

The author of "Common Sense" added: "There are matters in the Bible, said to be done by the express commandment of God, that are shocking to humanity and to every idea we have of moral justice."
In touching revealed religion I prefer, but do not comprehensively affirm, the Common Sense philosophy of Thomas Reid: "In the strict and proper sense, I take an efficient cause to be a being who had power to produce the effect, and exerted that power for that purpose."

The term "common sense" is ambiguous and often difficult to define, I partially concur with Reid's statement: "There is no greater impediment to the advancement of knowledge than the ambiguity of words."

This volume offers a unique look at the varied initiators of common sense and populist thought in history. Furthermore, Rosenfeld furnishes a fresh and unique report concerning the era of revolutions as she describes what this period bestowed to the present and future political development.

About the Author

Ann Camacho has been an English teacher for more than 20 years. She currently teaches American literature at North High School in Riverside, California. Her students (and the student body as a whole) are very diverse, and many are in the school’s International Baccalaureate program and/or AP classes. Ann also participates in the AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) college preparation program for students (often, but not always, from low-income homes) who have college aspirations but are falling short of their potential or who don’t believe college is within reach. She lives in Riverside, California.

This book is a must read for the young and the young at heart!

After reading the introduction of Bookmarked, I was hooked--captivated by the challenge issued to present and former high school students to share their stories of self-reflection and life-lessons learned. I plunged deep into Part I and immersed myself in the courage and boldness of each essay. I could not part with the book. I carried it faithfully with me to work and simply could not wait for my morning and afternoon breaks or my commute home to read the next essay. What I absolutely loved about Bookmarked was the opportunity it allowed for me to find solace and comfort in my own reflections. The "Questions for Reflection, Discussion, and Writing" sections succeed as an outlet for the reader to further connect, not only to the essays, but to their own triumphs and tribulations.

I am an adult in my late thirties, but I must admit I carried Bookmarked with me for days after I finished reading the book. I shared the book and my feedback with those close to me: young and old. The essays sparked a dialogue between my teenage son and me--conversations I will forever cherish.

Every high school student would greatly benefit from reading Bookmarked, especially eleventh and twelfth graders. Just knowing that they are not alone, that other students share the same fears, doubts, family issues, cultural norms, hopes, dreams, and aspirations, is sheer motivation to keep moving forward no matter what obstacles may come along.

Bookmarked has left an indelible mark on my soul. Well done to the editor and to the young people who shared a glimpse into their own lives so that our lives may be more enriched and empowered. Bookmarked continues to pay it forward, one student at a time! Keep reading and keep sharing.

Bookmarked: A project to be repeated

I have been teaching 8th grade for a while and I understand, perhaps better than people might think, that for even our brightest most mature students, 7th and 8th grade are transitional years. Good kids do crazy things and get suspended. Readers stop reading. And everyone else seems like Rose and Jack, holding on desperately to the Titanic railing as it gets sucked into the very cold Atlantic.

It will get better, we try and tell parents. We have enough lifeboats; it's just getting the kids into them.

"Bookmarked: Teen Essays on Life and Literature from Tolkien to Twilight" is a book that every middle school and high school teacher should buy. It's not available on Kindle, so I had to buy an actual book off of amazon and even though it was paperback, I was struck by how heavy it was. I'm such a wimp now. Thank you Kindle.

If I have any complaints about the book is that it is focuses maybe too much on books from the high school canon so lots of quotes from "Hamlet" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Great Gatsby", and not that there's anything wrong with those, but I wish that more of the books that had moved these students were books they had discovered on their own. But there were those too.

The project assigned to the students was to pick a quote from a book that had moved them and tie it into their own lives. What you get are 2-3 page mini memoirs motivated by these quotes. What I enjoyed most is that these students came from a wide variety of backgrounds and that each piece ended with where the student is today and each one of them had found success in some manner.

"Bookmarked" shows students who suffered through the death of friends and parents, parent divorces, anorexia and just about every other thing you can think of that plagues kids today. It did not shy away from controversial issues, from religion to sexuality. Sometimes the memoir addressed both.

Ann Camacho, the editor and teacher, says this about reading: "Books are blueprints for living and roadmaps for our lives."

This is what we should be teaching our students. The stories are moving and so are the quotes:

From Gandalf in "The Fellowship of the Ring:" "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

From Christopher Robin in "Winnie the Pooh:" "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

From Dumbledore to Harry Potter in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:" "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

Reading--what a thing of beauty.

Yearning for a Philosophical or Psychological Journey?

Ann Camacho, a high school English teacher, was inspired to create a compilation of essays written by her former and present students called Bookmarked. They were given the task of writing an essay based off of a quote that spoke to them, and each writer wrote a story that was then separated into five parts; beliefs and ideals, family, friends, and love, and hard times and hope are just a few. Since each student opted for an individual quote, there is no plot that the book follows.

However, it combines ideas and tales that appeal to young adults and teenagers because most of the stories tackle some form of identity crisis or development - something that, coming from a teenager, all teens go through. They provide insight and guidance from others who have gone through scenarios akin to those present in our everyday lives, allowing us to form a connection with the students.

A more modern version of Chicken Soup for the Soul branch, this book finds a spot in every adolescent child's heart. The book is loveable and an easy read. Each component of Bookmarked is essentially its own short story, making it fun and bound to keep the attention of every busy teen. The author poses questions at the end of each section, causing the reader to think about what he or she has just read. It helps make this book perfect for students about to journey into the college application world or, perhaps, someone who yearns for a philosophical or psychological journey. The book is a valuable addition to any library.

Great.....But can be much better

If you're interested in aviation well, this is the book for you.. It's a comprehensive visual representation of the history of aviation.... and has almost every major aircraft type from the Wright flyer to the F-22 Raptor

however it lacks the following aircraft:

1) The Boeng B-29 Superfortress
2) The Dassault Rafale
3) The A-26 Invader
4) The Hawker Typhoon
5) Later variants of the Spitfire

It would have been much better if certain pictures had not been split across 2 pages (i.e. aircraft like the F-14 Tomcat, FW190 and a few others). The cut out of the F-16 is shown larger than the cut outs of the F-15... & the A-20 Havoc (a medium bomber) is shown larger than the B-17 Flying Fortress & B-24 Liberator (Both the latter being heavy bombers)

Dimensions of all aircraft such as Fuselage length, wingspan,empty eight, maximum take-off weight should have been included for all aircraft...

Certain aircraft have not been dated properly.. for example the Seafire Mk.XVII is dated 1941 but in fact it appeared only in 1944..

Certain carrier based aircraft like the Seafire & Wyvern are shown with the wings folded obscuring the fuselage...

I'd have surely given it 5 stars if the issues mentioned above hadn't existed......

While the book is great for my son, who is into aviation, but the book was used or at least somewhat damaged at each of its four corners! This book was advertised as new, so I wrote complaining and I got 50% off.
