Gr 5-8-This title does an excellent job of presenting World War II in a nutshell. The text is divided into five chapters: "The Path to War," "Europe & the Atlantic War," the Pacific theater, Africa & the Middle East, and the end of the war. Each section is divided into several two-page topics. The title page of each chapter asks three questions that are answered in the text. It is followed by a two-page time line with boxed information and vintage photos (some are color enhanced). Single images fill other spreads. The format is somewhat busy with randomly spaced photos, paragraphs, charts, graphs, cutaways, and maps. A colored band down the outer right margin of some pages features a "more here" reference that lists subjects to research, further reading, TV and movies, historical sites, activities, and a mini glossary. A special code permits readers to log on to a website that has several interactive buttons with topics such as "Child Heroes," "On the Front Lines," "Animal Heroes," "Secrets and Spies," "Heroes at Home," and "Everyday Heroes and Heroines." This is just a superb overview!

I read it because I have a column on nonfiction in School Library Journal and do talks about it all over the country. I kept renewing this one because I did not think I would like it. Then I started it and was blown away. I have read many books about World War II, but this gave me a perspective and overview that was truly illuminating. I kept reading bits aloud to my husband and then showed him the spread on the island-by-island strategy for invading Japan. He stared at it incredulously (the whole thing made sense to me in a way I had never understood before) and vowed to read the whole book.
Which he did and kept saying he wished everyone he knew would read it because it provided such illumination.
I wish this series would multiply and especially one on the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War I. Maybe the Napoleonic wars. But we wish these were marketed to everyone. This is just absolutely excellent!

great overview

Word War 2 was a dark period in our nations history. This book will give students a peek into the way life was back then. It covers how the war started, describes where battles were fought and also has lots of information on how the war ended and what life was life after the war. Full color photos help to give a visual to tie the information together. Perfect resource for report writing.

This book gives a detailed yet on-point history of WWII appropriate for kids. The book is well & honestly written with wonderful learning points and awesome pictures!! Great factoids and definitions given along with great history timelines of the war. Highly recommended! My daughter loves it!
