Too full of unlikeable characters
By Debbie B.
This isn't exactly a bad book, but I think it's more geared to YA than adult readers. It's a modernization of Jane Austen's "Persuasion." I give it just below a 3-star rating (maybe 2.75), so I'm rounding it up to 3.

Anna and Erick started dating in high school, got engaged after graduation, but then she broke it off due to pressure from her family. Subsequently, Erick enlisted in the Navy. Now he's back in town, eight years later, and Anna's all tied up in knots over seeing him again. Her brother-in-law's sister Piper keeps hanging all over him, which isn't helping matters. Anna's very needy sister Mariah always seems to have nanny problems with her two sons and constantly relies on her to come over and help take care of them. Erick brings a Navy buddy to town with him, Bryan, whose fiancee dumped him, and now he's in the dumps. Interestingly, the story also includes a character named Emma, who is Anna's best friend and roommate, and she clearly is modelled after Jane Austen's heroine because she is a busybody/matchmaker for her friends, and there is some additional overlap with elements of that book's storyline incorporated here. Another mysterious subplot emerges regarding identity theft and fraudulent credit card charges.

There are a number of unlikeable characters in Persuasion, but they fare even worse here. In fact, I had trouble finding a character I completely liked. Piper and Bryan are completely annoying- Piper in sort of a self-absorbed high school cheerleader kind of way, and Bryan in a mopey bring-everyone-in-the-room-down-with-him kind of way. Xander (Piper's brother) doesn't know how to read women at all, and he sure doesn't deal with perceived rejection well. Anna's two nephews are just plain brats and, even though Mariah has a couple of human-like moments, most of the time she's insufferable. Emma is a know-it-all busybody who doesn't seem to understand boundaries; again, she's much worse than Jane Austen's creation. Anna's father, Walter Ellington, doesn't appear in much of the book but enough to prove his shallowness and failings as a father, though he tries to make it up to her near the end. Anna takes way too long to wake up and stop allowing Mariah to manipulate her, and she never does succeed in getting Emma to butt out. That leaves Erick, who's generally okay, though his actions are as confusing and misleading as Anna's, since it seems to take them forever to actually talk. (I mean, it's not as though it's Regency England where a chaperone is always required to hang around two unmarried people of the opposite gender.) Erick's sister Sabrina and her husband, Admiral Winslow, seem to be the only fully likeable characters in the book, and I wish they factored into the story more.

Emma works as an interior designer, and Anna as a piano teacher and church organist. Piper is a ballet dancer, Xander an IT geek. Erick and Bryan are on leave after spending a few years in the Navy. These primary characters are all in their mid-to late-twenties (with Piper perhaps in her early twenties) and are pursuing adult careers, but their actions and reactions make them seem more like they're still in high school. They simply come across as immature. If this is the way Anna and Erick interact and behave eight years later, they were definitely too young to get married to anyone back when they were originally engaged.

The quality of the writing itself is adequate, as there aren't noticeable grammar or spelling errors. I actually enjoyed the overlap between "Emma" and "Persuasion" and thought that was cleverly done. The mystery of the identity theft also had me stumped and worked well in the story. It mostly needs a few characters the reader wants to root for, and I couldn't find one here.

Excellent!
By V. Howard
This book was so good I read the whole thing it in a single day. I was so excited to get the beautiful paperback in the mail, and once I opened the cover, I was lost in Anna's world. This author is a true professional- talented at keeping a reader's attention and perfectly pacing everything to keep the reader engaged and interested throughout. The writing was flawless, the characters believable, the humor and romance balance- perfect. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a light-hearted, cozy, sweet romance novel to get lost in. Excellent!

I read the first book in this series and liked it so much, I couldn't wait to read the next one. None But You didn't disappoint and I enjoyed the book thoroughly. Anna is a great character with a lot of depth and a fun personality.

Franky uses heart-felt emotions to draw the reader into a fantastic story that will leave you laughing, grinning, and holding your breath as you wait to see what happens next. Anna and Erick's story is one that will stay with you long after you've read it.
