Stephen Bungay is a renowned military historian and author. In 2004 he was featured in the documentary television series about the Battle of Britain, Spitfire Ace. His other books include Alamein, which has been praised as “a brilliant balance between lucid analysis and piquant detail.” He lives in England.

One of the best books ever written about WWII

Rate "Most dangerous enemy" of Bungay together with Shattered Sword to the most
revealing and well written books of WWII which truly gives understanding on all
levels. Bungay analysis that the outcome BOB was in a way quite predictable: a British
air victory and a further weakening of the German airforce, which was, next to the
Panzerwaffe, the key weapon of the Wehrmacht.
If used properly (strategical and better use of the aircraft types like the Me110)
the Luftwaffe could have beaten the well lead and very prepared RAF fighter defenses.
Bungay stated that only had the Germans used some of their excellent infantry units
in raiding the radar stations on the coast, the outcome may have been quite different.
Further, if the Me110 had been used pure for marauding attacks like Erprobungsgruppe 210 against
radar stations, air command & controlling centres and airfields, with overhead layers
of Me109's the Germans could have beaten the strong RAF. To attack the airfields and catch RAF
fighters after landing could have been standard practice.
Finally the 1200 medium bombers were more than enough to destroy the 6 Spitfire and
Hurricane factories all lying in the South....
Just more imagination and treating the Luftwaffe as they did with their Panzers in Northern France...
This was the "Danger" which could have happened.
As it happened however the Luftwaffe was spoiled in a haphazard strategy ignoring the
valuable radar stations, keeping the RAF well informed during the battle.
As the RAF produced more fighters than the Germans, the Germans were fighting a loosing
battle if they only managed in inficting equal losses to the RAF. Historically they even
lost more planes than the RAF and therefore the BOB can be compared with battles like
Kursk were the German juggernaut failed like in the BOB against very well prepared defenses
because of the same reason: they hurled themselves against the enemy realying on their tactical
superior forces without any creative plan to win the battle.
During Kursk the Germans were more succesful in inflicting losses on their enemy but
could not inlict enough losses to crack the wall.........
Bungay stated that the Luftwaffe was already weakened before the BOB and losses in 1940 would
have serious consequences for Operation Barbarossa in 1941. German losses because of accidents
were very high during each campaing (about 35% of all aircraft lost was because of accidents!).
Ju88 en Me109 landings were very difficult and many were lost because of this!
Minor mistakes: no precise Order of Battle for the RAF, minor OoB mistakes for the Luftwaffe
and minor mistakes for rating the bomb load of the HE111 equal to the slim Dornier 17.
Losses of the Luftwaffe over Holland alone were just over 300 planes, especially the JU 52's
(of which only 50 were repaired).
And the Germans also lost more planes over Norway (also many Ju52's) than specified in the book.

Best ever!!!

Reviews for this book claim that it's the best tome written about the Battle of Britain in ten years. I disagree wholeheartedly. I've studied this era of WWII for almost 40 years and I must say that it's the finest - most complete account of the Battle that I've ever read. Very well done.

Detail at its best

Probably the best overall summary and analysis of the Battle of Britain. Every unit on both sides of every day's action is accounted for along with a breakdown of individual encounters. He has concluded that with the losses in men and equipment they suffered, the Luftwaffe could not help but fail to win the battle, which meant that Hitler had to call off the invasion in the fall of 1940. Very well illustrated as well.
