About the Author
Henri Lefebvre (1901–1991), former resistance fighter and professor of sociology at Strasbourg and Nanterre, was a member of the French Communist Party from 1928 until his expulsion in 1957. He was the author of sixty books on philosophy, sociology, politics, architecture and urbanism.

The Perfect Anthology Analyzing Western Life from 1890 to 1980

I am going on a reading binge before I take the GRE, and no series of books could be more perfect than this one. Lefebvre's long life from 1901 to 1991 has seen so much of life and analyzed the centuries authors, artists, and intellectual movements, that it allows one to briefly and concisely live the period through his thoughts.
Also it does have so many useful GRE words to review while reading it.
